It is common to wonder how often you can participate in a Texas driver safety course. You may take an Texas approved defensive driving course for three reasons: to dismiss a traffic citation, for insurance purposes, or as a volunteer.

How often can you take a Texas defensive driving course to dismiss a traffic citation?
The State of Texas only allows you to take a Texas driver safety course once a year to dismiss a traffic violation. So, if you have taken a Texas defensive driving program within the last 12 months, your Texas defensive driving eligibility will not be approved.
How often can you take Texas defensive driving for insurance purposes?
Your insurance company and the DPS will reinstate your Texas defensive driving eligibility once every three years. This will help keep your insurance premium at a consistent low rate.
How often can you take Texas defensive driving voluntarily?
If you need to participate in a Texas approved defensive driving course for a job or want to refresh your knowledge of traffic safety, you can take the Texas defensive driving course at any time. Your Texas defensive driving eligibility will automatically be approved since this will not be used to dismiss a citation or lower your insurance.

Your defensive driving due date will be set by the court. If you are unsure about when you need to have your completion certificate turned in, contact the court that issued your citation. We recommend that you complete the course at least a week before your due date to allow time to receive your document and deliver it to the court.
